I'm writing another book!
Things have been a little quiet: Here's why!
Let’s get right to it: I’m writing a new book about the dang zoo!
Zoo Kid is a passion project that I’ve been working on for awhile. It’s a deep dive on the history of zoos, the role they play in modern animal conservation, and what they teach us about our species’ relationship to nature. I’m thrilled to get to gush at book length about animals and the people who care for them and I’m overjoyed that Zoo Kid found an enthusiastic home over at Gallery.
That leads me to my next point: I’m spinning off the newsletter! Meet THE ZOOSLETTER.
Working on this book will have me much more plugged into the nature and climate beat than I have been in my public-facing work. So I decided to make a space where I can focus more on that sort of writing without feeling the pressure to relate things back to the topics that most of my subscribers are expecting. This is a place to write about the ethics of eating octopus, folkloric camel monsters, and free roaming Californian zebras. If that sounds up your alley, I’d recommend giving The Zoosletter a follow!
But if you’re an old school Brain Worms fan, never fear. This newsletter will still exist as a home for my writing about internet culture and current events. When a piece from The Zoosletter feels applicable, I’ll likely release it from here as well just so you can see what’s happening over on that side of the fence.
We’re awhile out from pub dates and preorders, so that’s all for now! I’ll be back soon with the latest update on the Difficult Year project.

Congratulations! I can wait to add another Dan Sheehan classic to my bookshelf
